If you are here it is because you are considering the idea of volunteering with the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.

We are really grateful for the positive impact Volunteering has for our local Community and proud to have many people who have moved from Volunteer to Career with us. The roles we currently offer are

  • Ambulance Service General Volunteer (ASGV)

  • Ambulance Car Service Driver - driving our vehicles only, not your own (VACS)

  • Community First Responder (CFR)

Here is just a little more information for you to consider before you provide your details:

  • You need to be over 16 years of age (18 for the VACS and Community First Responder).

  • You need to be kind, caring, compassionate and have a desire to help others - as an emergency service, things here don’t always run to a schedule although we try our best to plan ahead whenever possible!

  • Through Volunteering you give back to our local community but you will also gain a great sense of purpose and fulfillment as well as we hope, social enjoyment & knowledge and skills from participating in training.

  • As a volunteer you will need to complete our online NHS learning periodically and a minimum of an accredited emergency first aid course with us every 3 years. This includes driving assessments and appropriate advice if driving is part of your role. CFR’s have enhanced training provided by us, this includes attending monthly training sessions and supervised clinical practice sessions 6 monthly.

  • A uniform is provided to identify you as an Isle of Wight Ambulance Service Volunteer. For ASGV and VACS we ask you to wear your uniform when volunteering and as a CFR we ask you to wear full uniform when attending training and the minimum uniform when Responding is your issued hiviz jacket and ID card, although your uniform is preferred when possible.

  • 6 hours a month Volunteering is suggested with some people doing more hours and some less. Particularly our Ambulance Service General Volunteers often volunteer more sporadically and may volunteer for Community Engagement events or specific tasks only. We welcome the time you are happy to donate and are grateful for your help, however for the CFR role there is a requirement to volunteer regularly enough to maintain competency and confidence and to attend the regular training as well as regularly logging on to Respond.

  • We can pay a mileage rate per mile for attending necessary training and for CFR’s using their own transport to respond.

    As a VACS driver and CFR we ask that

  • Preferably hold a full current driving licence with a maximum of 3 penalty points (we complete a driving assessment with you)

    For CFRs only

  • Preferably have a roadworthy and road legal vehicle suitable for responding in/on under normal driving conditions. This includes notifying your insurer of your volunteering role. Most insurance companies do not charge for this but we can reimburse expenses with evidence provided to us
